I don’t know quite why, but the vast majority of French hats from the 20s-50s I find are black. They range from velours and longhairs to smooth soft fur felts and rather more rugged wool felts. This one is made of fantastic fur felt, and was made by Morreton and sold by Rene Marthe of Montluçon. I think it probably dates into the 1940s, but who knows. Could be 10 years older or younger. It’s a lovely hat to wear and has very flattering proportions with a mid-height crown and mid-width brim.
